Our Story
We are a vital congregation that worships in the Historic Jefferson area of downtown Lafayette, IN. Our strength in faith and spirit are reflected in our love and compassion for all others. We seek to improve the lives of not only of our worshiping community, but the lives of those living nearby as well. We are compelled to invest in building relationships through serving with our neighboring community.
Founded in 1858 as a German Methodist Church, we are now a United Methodist Church, and have been in our current location since 1885. Ours is a beautiful, old, and well-maintained church that has undeniably beautiful stained glass windows. In a sea of churches, ours is a small and dynamic congregation that seeks and pursues new opportunities.
As part of the Indiana United Methodist Church, our mission is to “Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” For us, this means we are led to make a difference by our presence, gifts, witness, and service for and with others. Brown Street UMC has adopted a vision of “Growing food, friends, and faith through Jesus Christ.” Our community garden has become a primary means for us to connect with and serve in community.
